According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for financial examiners will grow by six percent nationally over the next ten years. Financial examiners review balance sheets, evaluate the risk level of loans and assess bank management, among other things. In 2012, the average salary for a financial examiner was $75,800 annually. For the state of Indiana, the average salary for a financial analyst was $74.760 annually. In addition, credit and budget analysts were also in demand in Indiana in 2012 with annual salaries between $55,210 and $62,850. These statistics indicate why accredited finance degree programs in Indiana are a growing in popularity.

Accredited finance degree programs in Indiana provide industries in the state with professionals who have the knowledge and skills to manage money. A finance degree differs from an accounting degree in that finance professionals are able to manipulate the finances of an individual, corporation or governmental agency, while an accountant focuses on obtaining, collecting and organizing financial data.

University of Notre Dame

Mendoza College of Business

The University of Notre Dame began when Reverend Edward Sorin, CSC, a French priest, and seven of his companions took possession of 524 acres that the Bishop of Vincennes had given them in the Indiana mission fields in 1842. Father Sorin, who was only 28-years old, named his college L’Universite de Notre Dame du Lac, which translated to The University of Our Lady of the Lake in his native language of French. A disastrous fire in 1879 virtually destroyed the entire University. Rather than look at the fire negatively, Father Sorin said that the university named in honor of Our Lady had been built too small and that “she had to burn it to the ground to make the point.” Initially, the school was a university in name only, as the curriculum included religious novitiates, preparatory and grade schools, as well as a manual labor school. In the 1930s, the school began to grow as European scholars fleeing the Nazis strengthened the curriculum. After World War II, Father John J. Cavanaugh, CSC raised the entrance requirements and expanded the University significantly. Today, there are almost 12,000 students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs.

The Mendoza College of Business at Notre Dame began in 1917 when the university became the first in the country to offer a four-year degree in foreign commerce. In 1921, the College of Foreign and Domestic Commerce was founded with a primary function to serve mankind. In the 1950s, the college became known as the Program for Administrators, and in 1961, became the College of Business Administration. In March 2000, a naming gift from Kathy and Tom Mendoza, who was the vice-chairman of NetApp Inc., changed the name of the college to the Mendoza College o Business.

Valparaiso University

The Graduate School and Continuing Education

Valparaiso University was founded by Methodists in 1859 as an institution of coeducation known as Valparaiso Male and Female College. However, in 1871, the college was forced to close its doors due to the Civil War. In 1873, an enterprising educator, Henry Baker Brown, brought new life to the college when he opened the Northern Indiana Normal School. In 1900, the name was changed to Valparaiso College, and the school gained university status in 1906. It was known as the “poor man’s Harvard,” winning recognition as a low-cost, no-frills institution. When the United States entered World War I, however, the school again fell on economic hard times. The Lutheran University Association, a group of clergy and laity, purchased Valparaiso in 1925. Today, there are nearly 4,400 students enrolled at the college.
