About Northeastern University

Founded in 1898 as part of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) lecture series in Boston. Young men in the area, mostly immigrants, began attending the lectures for self-improvement. Due to the popularity of the lecture series, the YMCA began offering courses for young men who needed career training. This led to the creation of the Department of Law of the Boston YMCA which was a huge success. Additional courses were added and, in 1903, the automobile school opened which allowed women to enroll. The Evening Polytechnic School, as it became known, began offering courses in architecture, navigation surveying, mathematics and more.

Initially, courses were only offered in the evening but, in 1909, the school started offering courses during the day. As the school grew, more space was needed and directors began looking for a new location for the YMCA. A fire destroyed the initial building, leading the directors to rent space until they could find another location. In 1913, a new building opened on Huntington Avenue and, in 1922, the name of the school changed to Northeastern University of the Boston Young Men’s Christian Association.

In 1929, the Boston Red Sox moved to Fenway Park and Northeastern purchased the old stadium in order to expand. The Great Depression delayed construction until 1934. In 1937, the Northeastern University Corporation was created and in 1948, the school separated from the YMCA.

Today, Northeastern University is a global, experiential, research university that creates a unique approach to education.
