Accounting and Finance Programs Offered by National University

Check out our ranking of the Top 10 Affordable Master’s in Finance Online Degree Programs.

A Bachelor of Science in Accountancy is just one of the accounting and finance degree programs available at National University. This program features four-week classes that meet around the busy schedules of students. Available through the university’s School of Business and Management, it lets students take traditional or online classes. The university calls this a transition program because it helps students transition into the Nation graduate program in accounting. Students can enroll in the online or traditional Master of Accountancy program and take four-week courses too. Both the graduate and undergraduate programs include classes on management studies, finance and cost accounting.

The options for finance majors include both undergraduate and graduate options. National offers an Associate of Science in Business and a Bachelor of Business Administration that both include some finance courses. It also has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with finance courses and allows undergrads to select a minor in economics. The university’s Bachelor of Science in Finance Management is the main finance program available. It requires that students take classes such as Financial Planning, Analysis of Financial Statements and Principles of Management and Organizations.

National University also offers three certificate programs: two for undergrads and one for graduate students. The accountancy undergrad program includes courses on auditing and taxation. It allows students to enhance the degrees they already have or to earn a certificate while working on a business degree. The graduate accountancy certificate program is more advanced and allows students to complete the minimum number of credits needed to sit for the California CPA exam. Students living outside of California can sit for the exams in their states. National also offers an undergrad certificate program in finance.

About National University

National University is a private university system based out of California that has campuses in both California and Nevada. Established in 1971, it opened as a university that offered programs and opportunities for nontraditional students. Its founder spent years in the military and wanted to create a school that would help other veterans earn their degrees. Fewer than 30 students enrolled in classes during that first year, though this figure would grow significantly in the future. National slowly added more campuses, which further helped with its enrollment. It now has 11 campuses in California, including locations in Oxnard, San Diego, Woodland Hills, and San Jose. The university also offers courses on campus in Henderson, Nevada.

Though enrollment on its campuses is high, even more students take classes online. National switched from traditional distance learning programs to online programs after finding that students preferred the convenience of online classes. Some of its programs now include real-time classes that allow students to watch professors lecturing online and ask questions during those classes. They can also take courses that include lectures and other videos that they can stream later in the day. National ranks as one of the top schools for both veterans and military students because it allows them to major in different fields and complete their courses on military bases. Those students helped the university’s enrollment climb to more than 23,000.

National University Accreditation Details

Though National offers a large number of online classes and programs, all traditional and online programs have the same regional accreditation, which comes from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Students who need financial aid can use the FAFSA because of WASC accreditation, but they can also use this accreditation when they need to transfer their past college credits. All the accountancy and finance degree and certificate programs offered by the university have accreditation from the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE) too.

National University Application Requirements

Students applying to National University who never attended college before must take placement tests. The university will evaluate their scores to determine whether they need to take any prerequisite courses and if they are ready for college. Those who have college credits must provide National with official transcripts that show the names of all those classes and the grades they received. Students with a college or high school GPA of 2.0 or higher receive full admission to the university. Those with a lower GPA will remain on academic probation until they show that they can handle university studies. National also asks that prospective students use the university’s online application. Students will also need to submit other forms to apply for any prior learning credits they need.

Graduate students will also use the National online application. The university does not ask for test scores or letters of recommendation like other schools do. It only requires transcripts that show incoming students have a bachelor’s degree in a field that applies to the one they want to study and that they have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Those applying to a finance or accountancy program should have undergraduate degrees in business, finance, economics, accounting or a similar field. National has admissions advisors who can help students with the application process.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Most of the undergrad courses available at National University are worth 4.5 quarter units. Students pay $370 per quarter unit or $1,665 per class. They also pay a $60 student activity fee, which gives them access to all the activity centers and special events on the campuses they attend. Some courses charge extra fees and include those with lab components. Graduate students pay $430 per quarter unit or $1,935 per class. They will pay the same activity fee and the fees attached to certain classes.

The financial aid offered by the university includes institutional aid such as grants and scholarships. Students who have at least 30 credits and transfer from a community college qualify for the Transfer to Success scholarship, which provides students with up to $5,000 for their first years. Students who come from lower-income families can qualify for a scholarship of up to $25,000 a year. Many of the grants and scholarships are renewable for up to four years. National also allows students to use federal and state aid to pay for their classes and fees. They will need to submit the FAFSA and wait for the university to send them award letters that show what types of aid they will get. All accounting and finance majors at National University can qualify for financial aid.
