Studying Finance and Accounting at WU

Webster University appears in our ranking of the 50 Best Online Master of Finance Degree Programs.

Many colleges offer a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in finance online, but Webster University is one of just a small number of schools that offer a Master of Science in Finance online. Getting your MBA is a great option if you want to work for a major corporation in a supervisory position or take on a leadership role, but those programs often require that you take a large number of business classes and just a few finance courses. The MS Finance program offered by Webster University lets you learn everything you need to know about finance, economics, and accounting while still giving you the chance to take some business courses. The goals of the program include teaching students how to analyze financial assets, helping them understand the risks associated with credit programs and providing them with the skills needed to make major financial decisions.

All students must take three business courses in accounting theory, economics and business statistics before starting the program. If you took similar courses as an undergraduate, the university will let you start the program right away. You will then take 28 credit hours of finance courses like investments, management accounting, budgeting for corporations and financial markets and an additional nine credit hours of business electives. Webster University offers a one credit hour finance course for graduate students that covers some of the jobs open to graduates of these programs and how they can achieve success in their future careers.

About Webster University

Webster University provides an alternative for students who want to go to college or grad school but lack the time they think they need. Founded in 1915 as a small private college for women, it originally operated under the Sisters of Loretto and had an affiliation with the Catholic Church. After nearly five decades, the college finally admitted its first group of male students. The Sisters of Loretto later took a step back from the college and allowed a new board of directors to take over the school. It later became Webster College and became one of the first colleges in the state to allow African American students to enroll.

Now called Webster University, the college still has its main campus in Missouri, but a large number of its current students and graduates use its online system. The university also operates more than 70 campuses across the country, including campuses in Louisville, Los Angeles, Jacksonville, and Charleston. Many of those campuses are on or near military bases and hold classes for military men and women and their families. Webster encourages students to learn more about other parts of the world through its study abroad program. Students can study in parts of England, Mexico, and Japan. More than 170,000 students graduated from Webster since the college first opened, and its current enrollment across all campuses and its online system is more than 22,000.

Webster University Accreditation Details

Many online colleges and college chains have only national accreditation and not regional accreditation, but Webster University has both regional accreditation and program accreditation. The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS) granted the university its first type of accreditation and continues ensuring that the university should keep its regional accreditation through the use of performance reviews that occur every decade. Depending on the program you want to study or enroll in, that program may have its own accreditation as well. Its business program has accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs, and it has accreditation for its bachelor’s and master’s nursing programs from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. It also has accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Webster University Application Requirements

Students who have a bachelor’s degree can apply to Webster University and enroll in one of the more than 50 graduate degree programs that the university offers. Though these programs are available on many of its campuses, students can also complete their entire program online. Unlike other colleges that require students to take the GRE or a similar graduate exam and submit their scores from that test, Webster University lets students enroll in its graduate programs without taking one of those tests. You will need to have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college by the time you start classes. The university also requires that you submit an official transcript that shows you had a total minimum grade point average of 2.5 on the standard 4.0 scale. The university will not make a decision regarding your application until you submit the completed application and a college transcript.

The application itself lets you create a brand new account or log into the system with your Facebook account. After listing your current address, you must let the school know where you want to take classes, the program you want to enter and your current student level or status. Students will generally receive a response from the university within a few short weeks.

Tuition and Fees

Webster University charges various tuition rates based on where students attend classes. Those taking classes on campus pay rates of between $575 and $705 per credit hour. Online students face tuition charges of $780 per credit hour while enrolled in one of the university’s graduate programs. Those opting for one of the online programs may need to pay for some textbooks, but most of the resources that you need in your classes are available through the online system. Enlisted military men and women can sign up for discounted tuition through the university. This program drops the cost of their classes to as little as $350 per credit hour on some campuses and $470 per credit hour for online classes. There is also a discounted rate available for civilian students taking classes on one of its military campuses.

Getting help to pay for your online graduate classes is as easy as filing the FAFSA. Full-time online students typically qualify for federal student loans, but those who go to college part-time may need to apply for alternative student loans. Webster University also offers some scholarships and recommends that students fill out the FAFSA as quickly as possible to see if they qualify for any of those scholarships.
