Students who want to pursue accounting or finance programs at Athens State University may do so in traditional programs, as well as online degree programs. The university offers undergraduate degrees in accounting, minors in accounting, and certificates in accounting. The programs at Athens State University in finance and accounting are offered to online students and on-campus students. Options include the Bachelor of Science in Accounting with a minor or without a minor, as well as minors in forensic accounting, finance, and accounting. The university also offers an online Certificate in Accounting. The university has just a few graduate programs, but there are no options yet for accounting and finance majors.
To complete the online certificate program in accounting, students will need to complete 15 credits in classes that include Fundamentals of Accounting I, Fundamentals of Accounting II, Managerial Accounting, Intermediate Accounting I, and Intermediate Accounting II. Students who pursue the BS in Accounting online will need to complete 41 general education credits, 59 credits of major prerequisites, and 62 credits of professional courses.
Students are eligible to join the Accounting Club while enrolled in degree programs at Athens State University. The club features membership with the Institute of Management Accountants and can help students launch successful careers after graduation. To qualify for admission to the club, students must be enrolled in at least six credit hours per semester.
Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Accounting at Athens State University will be able to sit for the Certified Public Accountant Exam for the State of Alabama. Students who add a minor to their studies during enrollment will also qualify to sit for the state’s other accounting exams that include the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and Certified Management Accountant (CMA) tests.
Some of the classes bachelor’s degree students will take include Management Information Systems, Law for Accountants, Managerial Accounting, and Federal Tax Accounting I. Students will also take Cost Accounting and Advanced Auditing & Fraud Examination. Classes are offered in a combination of day, night, and online schedules.
About Athens State University
Athens State University is located in Alabama and has a student population of around 3,500. All students are enrolled in upper-division classes and are junior or senior level enrollees. There are three divisions at the university, which include the College of Education, the College of Business, and the College of Arts and Science. Teams at the school are nicknamed the Bears, and the school’s mascot is named Hebrew the Bear.
The school opened its doors in 1822 and was called the Athens Female Academy. In the 1840s, the Methodist Church would begin overseeing the school and would change its name to Athens Female Institute. The school would become a college in the late 1880s and would begin admitting male students in the 1930s. Eventually, the college would attain university status. The college’s historic district is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Athens State University Application Requirements
Undergraduate degree-seekers at Athens State University will need to have earned a minimum of 36 college-level credits before being accepted to the university because it operates as an upper-division institution. Applicants must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA at their previous institution. A minimum of 15 credits must satisfy general education requirements.
The application process requires most standard documents like the application and application fee. Other items that students must submit include official transcripts from all previous colleges. Students may be able to secure conditional admission after submitting unofficial transcripts but must have their official transcripts sent to gain regular admission. The university also offers restricted admission for students who don’t currently meet the minimum GPA requirement or have the number of hours required for transfer.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition for undergraduate students at Athens State University is $206.00 for in-state students and $412.00 for out-of-state students. Students who enroll as non-traditional undergraduate students will pay $246.00 if they’re from Alabama and the same rate if they’re from out-of-state. Graduate-level classes are $289.00 per credit hour for in-state students and $500.00 per credit hour for out-of-state students. Non-traditional graduate students pay $289.00 per credit hour, no matter their residency status.
Students who want to enroll in more than 19 credit hours must obtain approval from the Office of the Provost. Non-traditional tuition applies to students who enroll in any of the university’s online or blended classes. Some work experiences and practicum sessions are also charged as non-traditional tuition. Other fees students may pay include a $50.00 technology fee and a $1.00 bond surety fee. Students may also need to pay a late fee, lab fee, or auditing fee for their activities at Athens State University.
