Finance and Accounting Degrees Offered at University of Memphis

The University of Memphis offers financing and accounting degrees through its Fogelman College of Business and Economics. The School of Accountancy, in particular, offers bachelor’s degrees; master’s degrees; and doctoral degrees. Qualified candidates may also pursue accelerated BBA and MS degrees through the school.

One of the most popular accounting degrees offered by U of M, as the school is often called, is the Bachelor of Business Administration, or BBA, with a major in accounting. A total of 120 credit hours must be completed to earn this degree, and courses include Intermediate Accounting I and II; Cost Accounting; and Federal Income Tax. Three tracks are available for the Master of Science in Accounting degree program: General Accounting, Data Analytics and Taxation. These are five-year, 150-hour programs with courses that include Advanced Financial Reporting; Internal Auditing; and Tax Research and Theory. The school also offers a Master of Science in Business degree program with a concentration in Finance, and its PhD in Accounting degree program boasts a strong national reputation.

About the University of Memphis

In 1909, the Tennessee Legislature enacted a law calling for the establishment of three colleges. One was required to be located in West Tennessee; Memphis was chosen primarily for its proximity to railroads, which would allow faculty and students to travel to and from home more easily.

The West Tennessee Normal School, as the University of Memphis was originally known, was established in 1912. In 1925, its name changed to the Western Tennessee State Teachers College, and it changed again in 1941 to Memphis State College. The school awarded its first bachelor’s degrees in 1951. Upon obtaining full university status in 1957, its name changed again to Memphis State University. In 1966, the school awarded its first doctoral degrees. Its name changed for the final time in 1994, and it has been known as the University of Memphis ever since.

A public research university, the University of Memphis has a student population of around 22,000. Located on 1,160 acres about five miles east of downtown Memphis, it is ranked 272nd in National Universities by U.S. News and World Report. That publication also ranks the school 52nd for Best Online Bachelor’s Programs, 62nd for Best Online MBA programs and 135th for Top Public Schools. Additionally, The Princeton Review listed the school’s online MBA program among its Top Online MBA Programs.

University of Memphis Accreditation Details

The University of Memphis holds accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, or SACS. This accreditation applies to the university’s bachelor’s, professional, master’s and doctoral degree programs as well as to its graduate certification programs. Its Fogelman College of Business and Economics, which offers accounting and finance degree programs, is accredited by the AACSB – International. Fewer than 5 percent of business schools hold this accreditation, and the University of Memphis is the only school in the Memphis metropolitan region that does. It has held this accreditation on a continuous basis since 1970.

University of Memphis Application Requirements

The University of Memphis is regarded as a fairly easy school to be accepted into for undergraduate studies. Most recently, it had an acceptance rate of 84.3 percent; out of 14,141 applicants, 11,921 were admitted to the university.

To be admitted into the University of Memphis as an undergraduate accounting or finance major, students must score in the top 61 percent during their high school careers. Students who have a grade point average of 3.33 are more likely to be accepted into the school. This is equal to a grade of B+. Additionally, they should aim for SAT scores of between 970 and 1210 and ACT scores between 19 and 26.

To be admitted to the Fogelman College of Business and Economics, students must hold a bachelor’s degree. A GMAT score of 500 or higher is also required, and the student must have maintained a grade-point average of at least 3.0 during their undergraduate studies. Of the 199 students who most recently applied for admission to Fogelman, 139 of them were accepted.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The average in-state tuition for undergraduate students at the University of Memphis is $9,701. That figure increases to $16,037 for out-of-state students. Tuition for the school’s online bachelor’s degree programs averaged around $463 per credit, and the cost may be higher for out-of-state students depending on the degree program. Officially, online programs at this school fall into the eCampus category, and many options are available.

For those who wish to pursue BBA degrees and professional degrees from the Fogelman College of Business and Economics, or FCBE, the average rate for full-time, in-state students is $609 per credit. For full-time, out-of-state students, the rate is $1,097 per credit. In total, the cost to complete a degree program through the school averaged around $58,300 for in-state students and around $75,390 for out-of-state students. More than 75 scholarships are available to declared business majors, including those who are pursuing accounting and finance degrees, and FCBE students receive more than $300,000 in such scholarships every year.

Additionally, another set of scholarships is available to students of the School of Accounting at Fogelman College of Business and Economics. These include both performance- and needs-based scholarships. To qualify, students must have full-time status; a minimum GPA of 3.25 is required, and preference is given to students with GPAs of 3.50 and higher. Only current accounting majors are eligible for these scholarships. Students may explore scholarship opportunities through the University of Memphis’s Tiger Scholarship Manager portal. Incoming and prospective students are advised to apply for scholarships before arriving because many of them are specifically intended for prospective students, and these tend to be awarded the most quickly. Examples of available scholarships include the Dr. Lillian H. Chaney Business Scholarship and the Kimmelman Scholarship Program Fund.

As for the university as a whole, 98 percent of undergraduate students receive some form of financial aid. The average amount of this aid was $9,884. All told, undergraduate students at the school receive more than $102.5 million in financial aid in a given year.
