Dallas is a great place to study finance and accounting because it is a hub of commerce. The University of Texas at Dallas prepares students for the business and financial world through its Naveen Jindal School of Management. Some of the programs are offered online and many are offered in a variety of formats to accommodate students already working in the Business.
The Bachelor of Science in Finance, for instance, is a 120-semester credit-hour program that is offered in a traditional campus program or online. It can be completed in four years of full-time study. There are 42 hours of general core courses and 74 courses in the major. The degree may be earned in one of five tracks: Corporate Finance; Investment; Real Estate Investment Management; Risk Management and Insurance and Financial Mathematics. Additionally, students may pursue the degree on a “fast track” that enables them to earn graduate credits toward the MBA or the MS during the undergraduate program. All students in the management school are required to take an internship and to perform at least 100 hours of community service.
The Bachelor of Science in Accounting is another program that includes a fast track option. Courses are offered in the day or in the evenings. The degree plan is customizable through the selection of electives. There are 120 hours in this program, including 42 hours of core courses and 74 semester-credit-hours in the major. Students can take up to a three-month internship and then opt to extend it. The core courses include communications, mathematics, behavioral sciences, life and physical sciences, and other general education courses. Sample courses in the major are Applied Calculus I and II; Introductory Financial Accounting; Discrete Mathematics for Computing and others.
The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, although not strictly a program in finance or in accounting, offers courses in both. It is a 120 credit-hour program that requires an internship and 100 hours of community service. It features a fast track and can be earned in the concentrations of General Business Administration; Business Analytics; Business Economics; Energy Management; Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Real Estate Investment Management; Risk Management and Insurance or Sales.
The university has a Professional Program in Finance that is a specialty degree program open to only the top students in the Jindal School of Management.
The Master of Science in Finance is a Cohort program that requires completion of a minimum of 36 credit-hours to graduate. It may be completed in 12 months and consists of 12 courses including Business Economics; Quantitative Methods in Finance and other courses.
The Master of Science in Finance (STEM) can be earned full or part-time. There are 18 credit-hours in the core and 18 elective hours that can be used to tailor the degree to student career goals. There are five concentrations from which to choose: Financial Analysis; Corporate Finance/ Investment Banking; Real Estate Finance; Financial Technology and Financial Management.
There is also a Master of Science in Financial Engineering and Risk Management that contains 36 credit-hours and can be completed in 18-24 months and a Ph.D. in Finance.
The MBA at the Naveen Jindal School of Management is a 53 credit program that can be earned in five formats: students selecting the Professional MBA Online can take up to 72 months to complete the program. The Full-Time MBA is offered in daytime courses or in the evening. The Professional MBA Flex is offered in the evenings and students may take up to 72 months to earn the degree. The Executive MBA is offered as a cohort on weekends and hybrid. The Professional MBA -Evenings can be completed in 24 months. Students can earn the degree as a double major ( MS/MBA) with 13 other programs and there are 15 options for concentrations. The full-time cohort MBA is a lock-step program that consists of 32 core courses and 18 electives.

This university was founded in 1969, envisioned to be the “MIT of the South.” The Naveen Jindal School of Management is the showpiece business and management school. It has state-of-the-art resources and is nationally known. The University of Texas at Dallas Application Requirements
Students applying to the university as first-time freshmen should complete the online Apply Texas form. There is a $50 non-refundable application fee, but students attending the Scholars’ Day may waive the fee, as may those with approved ACT/SAT scores. Students should arrange for their high schools to send their official transcripts to the university. The agency administering the SAT or ACT ( whichever the student took) should submit those official scores as well. The Apply Texas application also offers students the option of completing an essay question, submitting a resume, uploading letters of recommendation and other documentation.
Students applying as graduates should review the requisites of the department where their degree resides. They may choose to upload digital PDF copies of their transcripts, graduate admission test scores, essays, resumes and letters of recommendation. Official documents should only be sent after acceptance to the school. There is a $50 non-refundable application fee.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The University of Texas at Dallas offers a tuition guarantee that is good for 12 semesters. The guarantee also extends to students transferring from Texas junior colleges.
The average undergraduate tuition (including fees) for 12 credits is $13, 034 a year. That amount does not take personal expenses, books and supplies, or room and board into consideration. Graduate tuition averages $6,937 per semester.
Most students need assistance paying for their degree programs. The first step in getting that help is completing the FAFSA form. Texas offers several grants in addition to the federal assistance awarded through FAFSA. This “gift aid” ( so called because it does not need to be repaid) includes that TEXAS Grant, The Texas Educational Opportunity Grant, and grants for certain professions as well as for special populations.
The university offers grants and scholarships as well. Most of these are merit-based, but there are some which stipulate financial need as well. The schools also offers some loans.
Students who do not earn enough “gift money” to meet their education debt can take out student loans or get part-time jobs. Work-study is another excellent option for paying for degree programs at the University of Texas at Dallas.
